Celebrating 80 Years of Rosta AG: A Journey of Innovation and Excellence

Rosta AG, a global leader in rubber–suspension products for industrial equipment, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. That is more than three–quarters of a century of making top machine components for businesses everywhere. But like those of all large corporations, Rosta’s history stems from humble origins.

It all started in 1944, in the village of Staufen, Switzerland, where an entrepreneur named Ernest Rohr was commissioned to produce a simple, efficient solution for supporting axles in truck trailers. He developed a new kind of rubber spring element which he created to support, dampen, and suspend vehicle axles. After patenting this alternative to standard axle suspension, Rohr established a new business, both owned and operated by his family. He christened the company with a unique name that blended his own surname, Rohr, with the name of his hometown, Staufen: Rosta.

The company expanded rapidly over the next decade. This growth was so quick that the headquarters had to move to a bigger plant in Hunzenschwil in 1955, where it still thrives today.

For many years, Rosta focused on making use of the patent as a space–saving suspension for trailer axles. These suspension elements also offered long service life with no maintenance. They were designed for loads ranging from 250 to 5 000 kg.

Beginning in the 1960s, however, the unique concept behind the Rosta rubber suspension unit found other uses in general mechanical engineering applications. For instance, they began being used for tension and pressure elements in chain and belt drives, suspension of screens and conveyor troughs in foodstuff processing, and rotary suspensions for school chairs.

Soon, Rosta expanded to other countries, and its rubber–suspension solutions became the international standard in general mechanical engineering.

Fast forward 80 years, and Rosta AG has grown from its humble beginnings to a global leader in rubber–suspension products. In addition to its headquarters and production site in Switzerland, ROSTA has 6 subsidiaries in Germany, Italy, Canada, the USA, China and Australia with over 120 employees. The global network with over 30 partners in more than 40 countries positions Rosta  to serve customers far beyond its borders swiftly and promptly.

The secret to Rosta’s success lies in its innovative product idea: the development of rubber spring and damping systems – these unique rubber suspension elements, the heart of their product line, are maintenance–free, noiseless, have a long service life, have found countless uses for tensioning, dampening, and supporting – characteristics that require a solution in almost every technical design.

As Rosta celebrates its 80th anniversary, the company remains future–focused and committed to innovation. New technologies and an innovative culture drive the development of new components with new materials. Rosta’s collaboration with its own rubber manufacturer has enabled continuous improvement in the quality and production of rubber inserts for specific and customized applications.

Rosta’s recent development, the patent pending an elastomer–powered torsional spring RPU (Rosta Plastic Unit) provides a whole new level of customization. The performance and design can be adjusted based on customer needs. RPU technology works in a special way. A rigid material forms the inner and outer sections, as a second flexible polymer material provides connecting elasticity. The design, geometry, and choice of flexible polymer in the construction can determine the level of relative movement of both the inner and other sections. On top of this, the physical limits and performance can be precisely engineered, including the damping co–efficient and the spring rate. Rosta will manufacture and supply the RPU according to exact specifications following initial prototyping, testing, and full customer approval.

With a strong emphasis on industry 4.0 and predictive maintenance, Rosta continues to provide added value to its customers through digital services like ROSTA DIGITAL, which offers predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and error alerts for vibrating machinery.

As we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Rosta AG, we look back at a journey marked by engineering excellence and forward-thinking innovation. But more importantly, we look forward to a future where Rosta continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of industrial equipment.
